I’ve also restored many of these which have been cleaned with brick acid and alike. Acid and limestone do not get on well! The acid ‘etches the stone which removes colour and leaves staining. The limestone needs to be cleaned with low grit diamond pads to help bring back the colour. It needs to be then sealed with the correct seal which will bring back the lovely black colour and seal the stone. Please see the results achieved in the pics of previous work.
