Victorian/Edwardian Tile Flooring
Often referred to as Minton tiles, these beautiful geometric floors are usually found in hallways. After falling out of fashion in the 1960/70’s they are now very much sought after. A high percentage of Victorian tiles I restore are often discovered by the customer when removing existing flooring to reveal these gems. Some are in better condition than others, often carpet covered floors can cause issues with damp and efflorescence and cause underlay to leave resin marks that seep in to the tiles over time. However, restoration results can be very impressive. Victorian hallways come in many different patterns & colours, usually the more colours the more expensive the floor would have originally been to lay, blue was a particular costly tile due to the cost of dyes in Victorian times. I seal the hallways with either a matt finish impregnating seal or a sheen topical seal finish which offers the ‘wow’ factor. A restored hallway is the focal point of any home.

Quarry tile cleaning
Quarry tiles were popular in victorian times but can date much further back that that era. The distinctive orange/red colour can clean up to look great, especially when sealed. Red & black checked 6” square tiles are common, but sizes can be up to 12” square, quarry tiles are to be found just as much in living rooms & kitchens as in hallways. Please see the gallery for the many quarry tile restorations I’ve done.
